The seed for this road trip was planted, when I took the Cat Ferry from Bar Harbor, Maine, to Yarmouth, Nova Scotia in 2001. I was on a tour of the New England States as a part of my quest to visit all fifty US States. I had taken a side trip to Canada's Ocean Playground based on a suggestion of Dee, a friend, who lives there. I was so impressed with the beauty and charm of the area that I had to see more of the country. In the years that followed, I had a rather full plate with respect to travel. I still had not seen about twenty-two of the states in my own country, and I had this long unsatisfied desire to visit Ireland and to meet some online friends across the world. This would result in my circumnavigating the planet. In 2002 and 2003, I completed trips where I visited all the remaining States. In 2004, I took that trip around the world as a retirement gift to myself.
Once those journeys were completed, I could get busy working on touring Canada. I got the idea of driving coast to coast through Canada, after I had completed the States. My plans were to visit all ten Provinces and as many Territories as possible. During this trip, I did pretty well in achieving that goal. I saw all the Provinces and two of the three Territories. There are no roads to Nunavut during the summer season, so I checked on flights there, but the fares didn't fit my budget. Consequently, Nunavut will have to wait for another time.
My trip also included three weeks each in Alaska and Washington. I was on the road for 139 days from May 1 until September 16, 2008. 93 of the 139 days were spent in Canada. I kept a detailed journal during the trip and that provided a frist draft for the book, Oh! Canada! I also took over 6500 photographs of this very beautiful country. Many of those photos are on the pages, which are linked from the photographs on this page. Each link will take you to a Province or Territory in alphabetical order. From those pages you can follow the photo links to specific places. I hope you enjoy them.
