I don't compare her to anyone
that I've ever known before,
except myself, no other bar none,

I search for someone who matches me.
Who cares about the things I do.
Someone who "She and I" make a "We",
who's sensitive and gentle, too.

A woman who has strong emotions,
a sense of humor, and can laugh.
One who will accept my devotion,
who won't pick up on every gaffe.

I had seen all of these things in her,
I also noticed something else.
Someone with a heart also injured
and little confidence in herself.

Very afraid of "stuff" from her past,
fear that history will repeat.
Alarmed that our love just will not last,
that she will have to bear defeat.
