| These photos were taken from the Merritt Island Wildlife Refuge and the Canaveral National Seashore. The view shows the main fuel tank and two booster rockets. Alantis is behind these and not visible. The water tank at the left holds a million gallons of water, which at launch is dumped on the launch pad to prevent its melting by the heat of the launch. |

| The Enterprise, named for the Starship Enterprise of Star Trek fame, is a shuttle mockup, which visitors to the Kennedy Space Center can tour. |

| The large pointed cylinder at the top of the launch pad is a lightning rod. It protects the shuttle from lightning damage during the frequent thunder storms over KSC. Central Florida is the lightning capitol of the world. |
